Migration

Migration means leaving home and starting a new life in a new country. This brings opportunities, but also many challenges. Find out here what support is available when you arrive, what rights migrants have and how advice can help you.

Farewell & new beginning

People migrate for various reasons - work, education, family or protection from persecution. However, there are often hurdles along the way: Language, work, recognition of qualifications or access to social benefits are just some of the challenges.

Signs that support is useful

  • Uncertainty about residence and legal status - if you are unsure whether you can obtain a residence permit or work permit.
  • Problems with the recognition of professional qualifications - if your qualification from abroad is not recognized or you need a post-qualification.
  • Challenges in finding a job - if you are looking for work but have difficulties due to language barriers or missing documents.
  • Difficulties in dealing with authorities - if you need support with applications for citizens' allowance, housing benefit or social benefits.
  • Social isolation or lack of networks - if you have not yet found any contacts in your new environment.

Finding support: Where can I get help?

Migration is a long process, but you don't have to go it alone. Numerous agencies offer support for migrants - with questions about residence, education, work and social rights.

  • Migration advice centers (MBE): These agencies support adults with a migration background with legal issues, labour market integration, social benefits and finding language courses.
  • Youth migration services (JMD): They offer special support for young people up to the age of 27 - e.g. with school, training and starting a career.
  • Recognition advice: These advice centres check whether professional qualifications from abroad can be recognized in Germany and support the process.
  • Integration courses and language courses: Migrants learn German through language courses and at the same time receive important information about rights, obligations and everyday life in Germany.
  • Neighbourhood meetings and meeting places: Here migrants find a community and the opportunity to make new contacts.
